Sizzling Bournemouth bandstand concerts were a hit

Lizzie and Tracey who play alto saxophone, take us back to our hot, sunny concerts in Bournemouth bandstand…

Here we are in the bandstand just before the second half of our concert started

On Sunday 30 June and Sunday 7 July, Bournemouth and District Concert Band (BDCB) entertained the crowds in Bournemouth’s Lower Gardens. The sun shone brilliantly on both occasions and the water in the river glistened invitingly as Simon raised his baton for our first piece, Amparito Roca.

With a set list full of our favourite, fun tunes, we knew the ever-growing crowd was in for a treat. From the Lion King to the Greatest Showman, Simon had the band playing to their full extent and the awaiting audience tapped their toes in appreciation. Both of these concerts were a triumphant success and many members of the audience commented on the high-quality of the sound produced.

We love playing at Bournemouth bandstand

These annual trips to the bandstand have to be one of our favourite gigs of the year. With over a combined total of 43 years in the band between us, we have both played in the bandstand almost every year since joining the alto saxophone section.

The view from the bandstand is stunning, with Bournemouth’s breath-taking scenery on show for all of the band to see. Luckily, we have Simon’s enthusiasm to keep us focused as it can be very easy to start ‘people watching’ from our high perch on the hill. The chance for a delicious ice-cream in the break is also an added bonus which we always take full advantage of!

What we love about this concert is its relaxed feel. These open-air concerts are perfect for all listeners, from tiny tots to our more seasoned listeners. Not only is the air filled with the melodic sounds of the band but laughter and fun can also be heard from down by the river. If a more formal concert with chairs isn’t your thing, then this is a perfect way to come and hear the band in a more relaxed setting.

Each of these concerts finished with energetic, show-stopping encores and the crowds cheered loudly. We think we certainly put on a show and we can’t wait for our next concert on Saturday 12 October. With lots of sneak peaks being sent our way from Simon already about pieces we will be playing, this is an exciting time for BDCB going ahead!
