We’re following Covid-19 guidance for bands

We’re following Covid-19 guidance from Making Music and the Government’s Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport very closely. Now we’re allowed to play music together again we had our first socially-distanced rehearsal on Thursday 20 May 2021.

We’ve put together a thorough risk assessment to ensure our rehearsals are as safe as possible for our band members.

The rules we’ve put in place are:

  • Band members have to book a seat each week and stick to that seat for the evening. We’re not able to fit the full band in the school hall so we’ve introduced a booking system. We can fit about 25 people in the hall sitting two metres apart.
  • If any band member feels unwell they must not come to rehearsal, even if they’ve booked a seat.
  • Arrival is from 7.30-8pm so that people can arrive at staggered times. We’ve divided the seating plan into colours and each band member must enter and leave the building via the door that corresponds to their section.
  • Sanitise hands on arrival and wear a face mask until seated.
  • Stay two metres apart from each other at all times.
  • Each band member must bring their own:
    • Instrument
    • Music – we send it out digitally each week and everyone must print out their own copy of the music
    • Music stand
    • Pegs for their stand
    • Pencil to make notes on their music
    • Mask
    • Towel – to catch spit drops
    • Spit pot – for instruments that need to be drained
    • Drink – there aren’t refreshments nor is there a refreshment break
    • Warm clothes because we open all the doors!
  • We put plastic screens in front of the forward-facing instruments to prevent the air flow blowing on people in front of them.
  • There is access to one toilet but we encourage people not to use it if possible.
  • The rehearsal is for one hour instead of two.
  • At the end of the evening a group of band members help clean the chairs used and anything that has been touched.

We record rehearsals live on Zoom so people can join in from home if they can’t make a rehearsal, didn’t get a seat, or aren’t quite ready to come back yet.
