Our band Committee members

We have lots of band Committee members who are very busy behind the scenes, helping things run smoothly. From planning events and socials to taking care of our music and finances, there’s a lot to do.

Meet the team and find out what we all do.

Bournemouth and District Concert Band is a registered charity and our five Trustees oversee the whole band. Some Trustees also sit on our general working Committee and they are in post as a Trustee for three years, from 2023-2026. We vote in our general working Committee every year.

Sue – Chair of Trustees and Committee Chairperson

Sue profile photoHi, I’m Sue and the Chairperson of the band. I have just worked out that I am entering my eighth year as Chairperson! It doesn’t feel that long, partly because the years pass very quickly with an active band like ours and with so many concerts and fun events for Committee to organise!

As Chairperson I have to chair Committee meetings which we hold every four-six weeks. I also make sure that Committee represents and takes on board the ideas of all band members, and work with Committee to make the necessary decisions on general band business (like how we use our subs and any income, for example). In my role I also coordinate all the work that Committee members have to do to ensure we have an exciting calendar of performances and events that keep the band active, fun and attractive to new members. I suppose I could describe my role as being a bit like glue… sticking all the parts together to make something good!

It might involve hard work, but I am so lucky to have a supportive team (the Committee). It’s a great buzz for us all when the plans around concerts and other events come together and you know that the band and our audiences have enjoyed themselves.

Jo – Trustee and Committee Treasurer

Jo profile photoI’m Jo and I’m responsible for dealing with the band’s finances. This involves collecting and making payments when they are due and ensuring that all transactions are recorded.

I work closely with the Committee to ensure we are spending our funds effectively and that we are maintaining a healthy bank balance.

I am also responsible for creating the end of year financial reports.

Diane – Trustee Secretary

Profile photo of Diane

Hi, I’m Diane and I took on the role of Trustee Secretary when the band obtained its charity status. I’m responsible for taking minutes at the Trustee meetings and ensuring items raised are shared with the Operational committee members.

I originally joined the band in 1998, playing flute and piccolo, and I have also been privileged with the opportunity to lead the section.

Currently I can be heard, some might say squeaking, on the piccolo. It is a pleasure to play in this band and the standard of concerts is always amazing. Playing with such a bunch of talented and friendly people is always a pleasure and joy.

Heather – Trustee Assistant Treasurer

Profile photo of HeatherAfter handing over the Treasurer baton to Jo in 2023, I am on hand to support our band finances as Trustee Assistant Treasurer.

I joined band in 2010 and play the flute.

Nick – Trustee and Committee Bandmaster

Nick profile photoI’m bandmaster Nick and have been for 11 years. I plan concert logistics so that we all know where we should be and what to bring and wear.

At the start of concerts, I tune the band and introduce our conductor, Simon. I coordinate equipment transportation and visit concert venues in advance to check stage size, rehearsal and storage spaces.

Writing band policies and constitution amendments are less exciting, but still an important part of the role. Seating plans and attendance lists are emailed weekly and I am adept at ‘sssshing’ band folk if they become too chatty in rehearsals!

Tracey – Committee Vice Chairperson and Welfare Officer

Tracey profile photoI take an active role in all band functions, including being the Welfare Officer and deputising in the Chairperson’s absence.

As the Welfare Officer I liaise with the Chairperson, Secretary and Treasurer to arrange for the provision of tokens of appreciation, to represent the band when such gestures are appropriate.

The responsibility for bringing band members’ grievances to the Committee, is another of my key roles. The Vice Chairperson role also covers the responsibilities of the band’s Safeguarding Officer.

I am the saxophone section lead and have been in the band for 33 years.

Kirsten – Committee Secretary

Kirsten profile photoI’m Kirsten and I joined the Committee as Secretary in 2019, just a few months after joining the band. My main role as Secretary is to take minutes at our Committee meetings and AGMs, and to manage our membership information.

This includes sending out membership forms to new members, and keeping existing members’ contact details up to date, making sure that everyone gets the information they need about rehearsals, concerts, and more.

Being part of the Committee allows me to give something back to the band that has offered me so much joy since I joined.

Nicola – Committee Librarian

Nicola profile photoAs the band’s Librarian, along with my deputy and perfectly formed mini group of helpers, I look after all the sheet music for the band. As you can see from my photo we have rather a lot. In fact it took me the first two years to go through all the packs and check the library list against the actual packs of music!

My biggest job is sorting music after a concert when we are finished with it, putting it in order and checking nothing is missing. My kids are pretty helpful and have got used to sorting music in front of the TV. A pet hate of mine is loose sheets of music without the instrument or piece name on them!

Gemma – Committee Deputy Librarian

Gemma Deputy LibrarianI’m Gemma and I joined the band in the Autumn of 2022, before joining the Committee in 2023. As the band’s Deputy Librarian I’m responsible for supporting the Librarian in providing and organising all the music needed for rehearsals and performances, and for maintaining and curating the band’s library of parts and scores.

I’m also heavily involved in getting our digital library organised and creating processes to make it easy for us to access and use.

Becca – Committee Deputy Librarian

Profile photo of BeccaI joined committee in 2025 after joining band in 2023. I support the other librarians with organising music for rehearsals and concerts and making sure it all gets put in the right place after we have finished using it. I help with adding music to our digital library and making sure our lists are kept up to date.

I also help Graham with our Bournemouth Daytime Community Band.

Graham – Committee Events and Activities Support

Graham profile photoI’m Graham and this is my second role on Committee. I’ve changed from Deputy Librarian to Events and Activities Support.

An exciting new role for me primarily supporting the Chairperson and Bandmaster in event planning and logistics.

I am also the main point of contact between the band and our rehearsal venue and liaise with them when necessary.

Emma – Committee Website Administrator

Emma profile photoI look after the band’s website which involves writing and sourcing content and making sure everything works from a technical point of view, which includes managing our website hosting platform. I’m also responsible for building our email marketing newsletter: In Tune. The newsletter is a great way of keeping our followers up to date on our band activities and events.

I love the English language and I’m always there to offer a helping hand when it comes to writing on-brand promotional copy for our online and offline channels.

Johanna – Committee Social Media Administrator

Johanna profile photo

I’m Johanna, another clarinet Committee member! I joined the band in early 2024 and decided to join the Committee a few months later.

I look after our social media accounts, posting about our music as well as social ventures. I also help with the design of our marketing materials.

SJ – Committee Social Secretary

SJ profile photoHi, I’m SJ, the new Social Secretary. We work very hard in rehearsals, so it’s only fair we get to play hard every so often too!

Beers, banter and brilliant activities are the aim for my organisation role, to help keep up our lovely friendships across the band. Suggestions for activities are welcome!

Katie – Committee Band Representative

Profile photo of KatieI’m a Band Representative and help with general committee duties.

I play the clarinet with band, and outside of band I play the saxophone and violin.
