30 people joined our first Bournemouth Daytime Community Band rehearsal

The first Bournemouth Daytime Community Band rehearsal was more successful than we could have imagined.

At least twenty minutes before the start of the rehearsal we already had some excited musicians setting up. By ten minutes before we reached the expected twenty people, yet more kept on coming. In came an unexpected baritone saxophone, followed by a French horn. The room kept filling, Graham had to find more chairs, and somehow we fit 30 people in.

Bournemouth Daytime Community Band rehearsalWe came prepared with our “Book For All Occasions”, which contains popular music in a range of difficulties and styles. We chose a simple piece to start with, had a quick tune up, then worked our way through to some more difficult pieces to get an idea of the music to choose for the following rehearsals.

Getting to know each other

The first half sped by and it was soon time for a break. Everyone was getting to know each other, musicians who used to play together but hadn’t seen each other for years were catching up (and of course we asked the French horn player if he’d consider joining the main band). It was exactly the welcoming atmosphere we had hoped for.

For the second half I handed the conductors’ baton over to Graham. We worked through the book a little more, and before long our first rehearsal was over.

Everyone left with a big smile, eager for the next rehearsal.
